The Ontario government needs to maintain the current laws that protect the public from unsafe dispensing of contact lenses rather than follow British Columbia’s lead in de-regulating the eye wear industry.
As of last May (2010), B.C. became the only jurisdiction in North America where it is legal to dispense prescription eyeglasses or contacts from an unsupervised sight test by an optician.

On July 13, 2010, the Toronto Sun published an op ed piece by the College Registrar speaking out against the current trend for teenage girls to use 'circle' lenses to imitate the wide-eyed 'manga' look made popular by Lady Gaga in her Bad Romance video. He went on to articulate the dangers of online dispensing and the need for the Ontario government to maintain the current laws that protect the public from unsafe dispensing rather than follow British Columbia's lead in de-regulating the eye wear industry.
