1. After receiving the applications, the program coordinator will pre-screen
according to the year you graduated after medical school etc., and then
give the rest applications to the program director. So a lot of old
graduates will be filtered. In that case, you can contact program director
if you are very excellent and he will help you and skip the pre-screening
standard. When you draft the email, you must take your time, because they
won’t use more than one minute to look at your email. An Email should be
limited in 5 sentences about your strengths. You should say you have many
papers, short graduate years, strong recommendations or very high scores,
etc. Don’t attach your cv. If it’s a university program, you should say
your research background. If it’s a community program, you should tell
about your clinical experiences. If you want to do this step, you should do
this early. This is only for psychiatry, not for other large programs.
2. After submission in September, they will wait until October to give
interviews. They will give interviews to AMGs first. If the program is
community based, most residents are IMGs. Some websites have friendly
program introductions for IMG's. Next interview invitation is in mid- Nov.
The third wave is in late Dec. The last wave is if AMGs cancel their spots,
then they will give more invitations. Some programs say they are university
programs but it’s actually a community program, only university affiliated.
University program cares about if you can get along with other people and
your personality. Community programs are more for your clinical skills. Some
will ask you cases or clinical problems.
3. You will receive an invitation. University residents will ask you for
dinner and you can ask them about the hospital. They will tell you that you
don’t need to be worried. whatever they say is not true and you do not have
the position until you sign the contract. They will give comments about you
. They can give their opinions but they won’t be able to make their
decisions. If they recommend somebody or object somebody, it matters. It’s
hard to get in if they object.
4. The university will give you a list to tell you who will interview you.
It generally contains some faculties and residents. You can look up their
introduction and papers and what they are interested in. During chatting,
you and them will have something to chat about. Vice PD or PD or Chair
sometimes will come too.
You must know how to be humorous and also recommend yourself. You must
practice beforehand. Don’t make it like script. Prepare for some funny
topics, what’s in your city? what are the famous foods here? Your wife or
husband will move here? what places are good for children? balabalabala they
can’t ask you if you want to join. you can show your interest.
5. Be polite to everybody. Don’t rush to the elevator. how you react after
you meet patients or colleagues, they will give you a score.
Site visiting is guided by residents. They will say you can ask them
questions. AMG will ask about on call, what you 6. don’t like about
programs. But it’s for AMGs. For IMGs, if you have a tons of programs, then
it’s another story. Otherwise, don’t ask this kind of questions.
7. After you go back home, you can write a excel and when you rank, you can
have a reference.
After the interview send a Thank you letter. After invitation, you should
send an email to thank them. no need to send a card. If you are really
interested, send them an email during holiday, saying I have been
interviewed there, I am really interested in your program.
8. Don’t make your interview too late. Ranking will be arranged by PD.
Unless chair is very interested in you.
If you annoy the residents, they won’t take you.
9. When you rank the program, just do it according to your only preferences.
10. You will receive an email in March, and the next day you will know where
you will go. If you have extra time, you can do one - two month
observership in your program before it starts. The program is very
competitive. It won’t be as competitive as surgery because they will kick
out several people every year. But psychiatry will kick out people based on
11. First aid about psychiatry, psychiatry clerkship etc books you can
start to read them.
12.In the end, dress nice when you go to do the interview. do your hair,
clothes, be professional.
13. answer questions : research matters. step3 score is not very important.
passing is ok. english is very important.
